Frequently Asked Questions

Which students can participate in DRITA?
9th graders from the cities of Danville, Martinsville, or Halifax, Henry and Pittsylvania Counties are invited to participate in DRITA. Applicants from groups currently under-represented in the information technology field; that is, African-American, Hispanic and/or Native American are especially encouraged to apply.

Are there any other requirements?

Participants must have completed Algebra I or be enrolled as a 9th grader.

Do participants have to be planning to study computer science in college?
No. Participants should have an interest in computers, how they work, and how they can be used in fields such as engineering, scientific research, medicine and education.

Should participants have computer skills before they apply?
No. Participants will start with a course on basic computer skills.

Does it cost to participate in DRITA?

Who provides transportation?
Transportation from your school will be available.

How long does the program last?

Participants will begin in the winter of their 9th grade year, and will continue in the program until the summer before their 12th grade year.

Will DRITA help students pass the SOLs?
There is tutoring available for 9th grade students who need help passing Algebra I. Otherwise, the material participants will learn is not covered on the SOL tests.

Why is the IALR involved with DRITA?
One of the building blocks for a knowledge-based economy is a workforce with advanced information technology skills. In Southside Virginia, young people interested in these skills have had very limited options for developing those skills. Most have had to leave the area for education and often did not return. As a result, local companies often have difficulty finding workers for IT-related positions.

Can my company get a DRITA intern?

DRITA internships begin in the 2nd year of the program, so beginning in early 2008, local employers will be invited to host an intern. Call Ciji Moore at (434) 766-6786 to find out more.
